Thangka Project
Besenyei Lili

Draw and paint in the
Thangka Project Studio

All thangka paintings are based on the iconometric representation of the face and body of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha. We can see on his face all buddhas and bodhisattvas, peaceful and wrathful deities. He looks at all sentient beings with compassionate eyes, hoping that everyone will realize their own Buddha nature. Depicting his face and body, we can be grateful to know his teachings in this life, to see and draw him in this form. The ancient tradition of thangka painting helps us connect to our true nature.
I am Lili Besenyei, a Buddhist teacher and the only thangka painter in Hungary. I studied thangka painting in Dharamshala and have not put down my brush for six years. I would like to share the meditative journey that can be experienced by drawing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. My goal is to show you how you can connect with Buddhas based on traditional Tibetan iconometry, which will help you find your inner peace and your spiritual journey.

During the session, I will introduce you to the world of thangka painting. You will learn about its history, the lives of thangka painters, the structure, meaning and application of a painting in the Buddhist world. A whole new world is revealed through symbols.
The learning method:
-
Drawing the iconometric figure about your deity of your choice on A3 paper (2-3 days)
-
Practice the inkline painting on working sheets (1-2 days)
-
Painting your thangka on 23×32 or 35×43 cm prepared canvas. (usually 1-2 months, but you decide which days you can come)
After contacting us by email, we will discuss what kind of painting you would like to create, so we can assess how much time you would need to achieve the desired image. You have the option of drawing/painting once or coming several times, even painting your own thangka. You can take your own creation and the iconometric figures you receive home so that you can create whenever you feel like it.
